Having the Time of My Life

This is my time

pulling away from me -

a rubber band
        that stretches
until it
breaks.

This is our time,

a snowflake

beautiful and fragile and melting away
in my hot, heavy-handed grasp.

I've gone from
0 to 44
in the blink of an eye.

from young
to...
not so young
             so quickly
it's given me vertigo.

Nobody lives forever

       it's the mantra
I hear again
                   and again
in my father's voice
on what turned out to be
his deathbed.

Nobody lives forever

             it's both comforting
and terrifying
            but most of all
incomprehensible.
